Utilize Media, Materials and Methods

 

Introductory Activity: 

At the beginning of the lesson the teacher will present a 2 minute photo story introducing the concept of percentages and outlining the relationship between fractions and percentages. See video below.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

At the end of the story the teacher will engage students in a question and answer session to determine whether or not they understand the concept. Examples of questions are: What is the whole as a percentage? Expected Answer: 1, 5 or 100. For incorrect answers the teacher will help the students to get the correct answer of 100.

Based on information gained from the introductory activity, the teacher then moves on to the Powerpoint presentation.

 

Step 1: The teacher will use a powerpoint to demonstrate the relationship between fractions and percentages. The powerpoint will show how to convert a fraction to a percentage. Students will be shown a picture of a pizza and will be asked to calculate various numbers of slices as a percentage of the whole. See attachment

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2: The teacher will again use interactive powerpoint to assist the students on how to compute a percentage of a given number in real-life situations. The teacher will give examples for the students to compute and will go around  and assess each student individually as requested.  See attachment.

Step 4: The teacher will engage students in a brainstorming session to identify real-life scenarios requiring the knowledge of percentages. 

 

Step 5: The teacher will engage students in a question and answer session which will highlight the relationship between fractions and percentages and various computations involving percentages.
